How to get rid of rats outside.

• Tame a cat or a dog. If a rat realizes that there is even a slight chance a predator is around, it will flee that area in fear of being made food.
• Moth balls stuffed around the perimeter of their activity always work the magic. This easy-to-use method keeps the rats away by the scent they produce. Care should however be taken when handling them as moth balls are known to affect other animals and even humans if they are in high concentration.
• Cotton balls dipped in ammonia and placed in their pathways is an effective repellent for rats as they can’t withstand the smell.
• Other great repellents that can be used are the peppermint oil, castor oil or citronellas which are characterized by their strong pungent smell. Using cotton balls or using them as sprays draw them off. Alternatively, growing the mint plants around infested areas is a long term solution.
• Mimicking the presence of a predator or an enemy. For instance scattering cat and dog fur all over, using plastic snakes or even place an owl’s feather in a visible place, the rat will run away.
• Pepper stings when it gets into eyes or nose. Spraying them around rat-prone areas makes it uneasy for rats to breathe and so it will take off as its life is at threat.
• One natural poison of rats is the bay leaf. Since rats eat almost anything, they see bay leaves as one of their many food sources only that they will kill them in the end; and the rats will be gone just like that.
• Rats love peanut butter and undoubtedly attract them; but peanut butter dipped in boric acid will instantly kill the rat. Care should be taken when handling this harmful chemical, keep out of reach of children and other animals and rinse hands properly after using them.
• A high concentration of onion odour is unpleasant to rats and will drive them away. Using onion slices and by regularly replacing them to maintain the concentration within the rat infested area is a natural remedy.
• Use of a trap is a common practice. Set a trap along their pathway, use cheese or peanut to bait them and in no time you got a rat captured. One can choose to release the rat in a far away bush so it won’t retrace back or call animal control.
• One can also use rat poison to kill the rat. The poison is usually sprinkled over food bait which the rat consumes.
• Always keep all the garbage inside trash cans and trash cans air-tight closed.
• Cow dung inflames a rat’s stomach while strands of human hair will form a hairball in their stomach. All these will result in digestive system failure hence death.
